Maybe it's realizing that online poker could be taken away at any moment, maybe's it's that i just realize how lucky i am to be able to play a game and make enough money to support myself with it.

Anyways, pokerwise the first half of 2011 was pretty meh, had a decent scoop, but no big scores, just some deep runs that resulted in breaking even, including a 98/16000 in the 109 main event, that was kindof heartbreaking.

Looking forward to WCOOP on stars in September and hoepfully qualifying for some live events, have never played an EPT or the PCA but would like to go, maybe this will finally be the time I do it and ship a seat.

I hope one day online poker is legalized world wide, I don't know if it will ever happen, but it would be nice. For now, I'm just going to be taking advantage of it while it's there.

Poker and Balance and the future...

Lately I've become somewhat of a poker slob. No routine, just kindof aimlessly playing some games when I feel like it and not really concentrating on the game. Part of that stems from worrying, worrying about the games drying up, worrying about poker not being a realistic endeavor, worrying about not being good enough.

Today i finally decided that I needed to stop worrying and just play. It sounds easy enough, but for someone with an obsessive personality it's actually quite challenging. I'm simply commiting myself to being consistent and playing quality poker for 3-8 hours a day (or whatever my schedule lets me do) and going from there. I'll be in vegas from Nov 15th to 24th playing the venetian deepstack series and then after that will be at home grinding online. I'm aiming at playing sng's and mixing in some longer sessions of PLO cash games. I've been 12-16 tabling at .25/.50 and like the game but want to get in longer sessions so I can increase my rakeback. Other than that I'll be updating regularly my status and taking some shots at qualifying for bigger online and live tournies, it's what I've been successful at in the past and what I hope to have success at in the future.

In other news, I'm training for a half marathon in Vancouver in Feb. and will likely be doing the Vegas half or full marathon in December 2011. I've just started training for it, but I'm going to keep updating my progress, my goal will be to get up to 70 miles a week before Feb, I'm not sure what my goal time for the race will be but likely 1:18 or under.
getting mine...

So laziness has allowed me to not be able to complete my year in review for 2009...

Now that it is june 2010 I'll just talk about stuff I have been doing in the last little while.

I haven't played too much the past week after shipping a a wsop seat on stars. In the step 6 i got headsup with DDbeast who was totally outplaying me headsup until I turned my aggression up to mach 12 and then sucked out on him, following that I promptly cold decked him and shipped the seat. Just proof you don't have to be good to win.

I have kindof run bad since that time, although i did take 3rd in another step 6 for 3k, I don't buyin directly to these things, if i was good i would have the cash too, but i suck so i have to beat the donkeys at level one and move up from there.

Anyways, this week i've shipped two step 5's, both times having alltime sng great player, and stars sponsored player, spacegravy bubble. Now that I've beat him in two straight sng's I feel I can rightfully declare myself a better player than him and will be asking pokerstars shortly why he is a sponsored player and i am not, i will of course be showing them the results of both tournies as proof as to why i am better than him. Having two sng's as my sample size definitely will give credit to my argument. It is easy to poke holes in someone's game when they are using a small sample size like one sng as proof they are a good player, but with victories in two sng's i feel like stars will simply have no choice but to sign me straight away.

Well, anyways, that's all for now, I'll post back here once I get a response from pokerstars about my sponsorship and the size of the contract they offer me.

Wave

A year in review... (part 1)

This was the first year that I dedicated myself to playing poker, not just as a hobby, but asa source of income. It was needless to say an interesting year as I had the great freedom that comes with being your own boss and being able to set my own hours of play, along with the added stress of having to rely on poker for part of my income. I'm hoping to recant my year as closely as possibly with the hopes of not only learning from mistakes, but also showing my successes so that I can build confidence for the coming years ahead. Before i begin I'll say that i am relatively happy with my year. Before i set out I determined that for me to actually be successful i would have to clear at least 40grand USD to consider poker as a reliable source of income. I acheived this and more, but am still disatisfied with some of the decisions i made and feel like I let myself get burned out part way through the year which caused a bit more stress on my bankroll then there needed to be.

Regardless I will try to retell the year in four parts, with the good and the bad...

part 1
It begins...

The year for me started off pretty well, I made the switch from tilt to stars after enjoying some good success in sng. For me stars was just more attractive because of the fact you can play mroe tables, so I felt starting the year at stars and giving it my whole playing tiem would be best because they have a great rewards/rakeback program which I could take advantage of if I played there the whole year.

For the first few days things went pretty well. I was focused on playing the 16 dollar turbo's exclusievly and was making the transition to playing 20 tables from 16, it went pretty well. then I went on a downswing, and it turned out to be a pretty bad one. About halfway through the month my bankroll had over 100 buyins for the level i was playing, a week later, after a few cashouts, my bankroll had about 20-25 buyins. It ended being about a 75 buy-in downswing when all was said and done and to get out of it I ended up playing 12-16 tables for a week, but eventually I built myself back up and by the end of the month I had a more secure roll to play with.

Beginning in Feb things started to click for me a little better, my roi for the month was much better and I was 20 tabling consistently. I also believe this was the month I final tabled the 10rebuy and finshed 8th netting me 1500 or so and giving me a decent roll to play with. This actually ended up being a pretty big development as it let me take some shots at the steps which led to a big score later in the year. All in all, the first two months were pretty crazy, I had a huge downswing which made me question if i should even be playing this game, and then bounced back to post decent profits in the first two months and ended up with a big final table as well. With my mian game being the 16 turbo's my goal for the rest of the year was continue grinding, build up my fpp's and take some shots at bigger tournies...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wavegoodbyeblog.blogspot.com/2009/12/year-in-review-part-1.html' title='A year in review... Either way I am going to keep putting 6 or 7 sets during the week and try to keep the momentum going...

Day 8...

Played four sessions, ran bad, played bad, ended up with a small loss for the day... just wasn't too motivated. I really just ran bad 5 handed to headsup today, it sounds like a broken record, but when it gets five handed you need a little luck to get you to headsup, you're never going to win all your allins, even when you're ahead. Today i just didn't hit any draws (missed so many flushes today it was unreal) and that's the way it went. I won't complain about making money though and will just try to put in more quality sessions tomorrow. I really feel like i am making better decisions though so it's just a matter of time. probably will only play 3 or 4 sets tomorrow, then hopefully 6 sets per day next week

My biggest problem right now is just making good plays five and six handed, i don't have much of a problem playing the bubble, but honestly i am hesitating making a few calls because i don't want to start calling super loose, I am just focusing on reading situations better right now and that will hopefully result in better play. I didn't run great in the last two, but i also made some bad plays early with big pairs.

One with KK when a bad player called me preflop and then called a large cont. bet three handed on a JJ2 board

At this point I shut down and checked, he bet 200 on the turn which i called getting huge odds, then he shoves the river for 900 chips, first hand of the tourney so i would have been left with 900 as well. Honestly this seems like a tough decision, but the way he played just screams trips for several reasons. first bad players like to protect their pairs, if he had say 1010 its almost a guarantee of two things, he is shoving the flop or checking the river, he did neither so i think qq and 1010 or any smaller pair are gone, if he had AA almost a guarantee he shoves pre. The only hand i beat is a bluff. Probably worst read/play of the day.

DAY 1

starting the 5000 grand challenge today, i am starting with only an 800 bankroll... i am kindof starting over bankroll wise as I just had too many things to pay for the last couple months and kept cashing out and then running bad.

Anyways, I am going to update my status daily, I feel like my game is slowly getting solid again after a couple months of playing sub par. The only other games I'll likely be playing would be PCA satties/steps and possibly a few mtt's. But for the first couple weeks it will likely be all 9man sng's and likely all 16's turbos.

The challenge is to make 5000 grand at these stakes (16' turbos). No real time goal, but I think end of October would be a good bet, but it really depends on how much I play. I am not a huge volume guy although i do play 20-25 tables but realistcally 4-6 sessions a day is usually my max. We'll see what happens, I'll update how the day goes later tonight.

wave's blog reloaded...

wow, i forgot i had this blog, it seems like so long ago i started this thing...

well, new blog same idea, I am doing a sng challenge, basically i am playing till i make 5000.00...

all the play will at 16sng on pokerstars, the best website on the planet bar none... i'll update my tally's daily and let you know how it's going...

New post, and challenge

OK, so I tried the blog thing and it didn't stick because I am lazy, but I am trying it again. I have stopped 16tabling and now only 12 or 14 table and this has really helped, 16 tables was ultimately just 2 tables two many and i find that even having 14 tables is much more controlable and gives me the extra second or two i need. still planning on playing lots of these into april and beyond. i need to play in some wsop satts this year and will be looking at the ones on full tilt and pokerstars.

monday, day 8??

Guess its not really important how many days it takes, although i am still trying to play 100 hundred a day. I played 92 sng's today so that is good, but i ran horribly for most of the day. It is actually remarkable how many coin flips i lost. If you play well then it is hard to have losing days, but you have to win at least half the coin flips and 60/40's (or Ax vs. KQ) to make money. I had one good session tonight that made today better than break even, so that was good. But very frustrating day, hopefully i get a good run of cards soon and build up some better profits. Hope to have 1000 sngs done by sunday:

36/92 ITM
12-1sts
9-2nds
15-3rds

+$97.00

overall:
510sngs
$1053.00 profit

weekend update

PLayed 80 sng's this weekend, which really isn't much but with the problems on stars and me using the weekends to get stuff done and hang out i actually play less than most on sat and sun. Anyways the goal was to play 100 over the two days but with the crash coming during my free time that was impossible. I played fairly well, however i am still not one hundred percent at 16 tabling yet and i have to make sure i don't let the high volume become an excuse for poor play.

80 sng's:

34/80ITM
11-1sts
7-2nds
16-3rds (mainly due to the crash, i ended up 3rd in about 9 out of 16 in one set alone)
+$169

Will be playing more this week hopefully, if not i will definietly be playing more in april, my goal is now to play 5000 before april 20th. This is a very reachable goal in my opinion and should net me a profit in 5 figures. We'll see what happens, i really want to take some shots at the wsop of poker this year too.

overall:
418 sngs played $954.00 profit

5th day- bounce back

I played 86 sng's today, which is good but i really want to be averaging a hundred a day, so I will see if can up the volume a bit next week. I have started 16 tabling all the time and it feels right. I was getting too loose in my play and decide to buckle down and start giving myself more opportunities for cashes. Playing too many hands is very easy to do in these tourneys, especially if you are running well. Playing so many tables makes you want to play less hands and makes me focus on being more anal about the hands i play. It worked well today and should help increase my volume. I ran poor this morning and i have seen some really beats, its amazing at the stupidity of plays you see in these things, this is what makes it so profitable, but you do have to put up with some ridiculous beats.

today:
37/86ITM
12-1sts
16-2nds
9-3rds

+311

Giving myself an opportunity to come top two lots which is good, ran poorly headsup for the most part today.

overall: 338sng's played, +$785.00

4th day=variance says hi

PLayed 81 sng's go, a couple sets of 16, and about four sets of 12. I finshed down for the day which isn't suprising considering the beats I took. What bothers me was the way I played and likely how I could have minimized this loss if I couldn't gotten lazy and made some bad pushes. Its hard after taking beats not to just want to shove on everyone, especially if your down to few tables, so I have to start remembering that everu table I have open counts. I ended with a good positive session so thats a good thing.

25/81 ITM
11-1
7-2
7-3

-$99.00

overall:
252sng's +474.00

Day 3- 16turbo sng challenge

Didn't play much again today cause of work, will be putting a full day in tomorrow and friday as well. I want to keep up this kind of ROI though, and think its definitely possible at this level. I think I can play 100 of these a day and average over 200 dollars profit daily. For the most part I 12 tabled, and did one set of 14 tables. I will likely keep 12 tabling, with the odd 14 or 16 table set thrown in when I'm feeling frisky and ready for the extra pressure. I will likley be playing about 100 of these a day for the two weeks, or at least till i get to one thousand. I will post my results for each one hundred that I play. I am thinking that if I can handle playing this many 16's, that I may stretch the challenge out to 5000, or even 10, 000. I am going on vacation in april, so I would like to play as many of these as possible until that time. I have had quite a bit of success playing sng's and likely that is where I will be playing most of my poker over the next couple of months at least.

My first challenge will be playing 1000 sng at the 16 level turbo on stars. I did this last year and was pretty successful. So I figured it would be a good challenge to begin this blog with. I will likely be posting updates and such daily. My goal will be a 15% ROI, although I would be happy with anything over 10%.

Things you can expect from this blog:
1. Talk about sng play and strategy
2. Me expressing my opinion about things I like and dislike
3. Crazy cash game tilt stories every once in a while
4. Me trying to qualify for the WSOP (longshot at best likely)
5. Watching me a build a bankroll through steady play in sng's
